Lake Lanier Olympic Park, at Clarks Bridge in Gainesville, hosted the rowing and canoe/kayak events of the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Run by the City of Gainesville, it's still a working paddlesports venue, and its sheltered stretch of the upper lake is some of the best paddling water on Lanier.

- Rowing crews and kayak teams train here. Give racing shells a wide berth and stay out of marked lanes.

- Bringing your own boat? Ask the park about launching beside the venue.
Why paddlers like the upper lake
North of Gainesville, Lanier narrows into the Chattahoochee River arm. Less open water means less wind chop and fewer big wakes than the south end near Buford Dam. More on where to paddle, or compare all kayak rentals.
